The Day of Visitors PDF Print E-mail

Last Sunday was a happy day with barest hint of melancholy as two friends visited - one leaving soon for Australia, the other a too infrequent guest.

Leo, a dear of friend of Katie's and Maddy's (more Maddy's), stopped by for a visit so his Mom could get some errands done ahead of relocating back to Australia.  He will be terribly missed as he shares a passion with Maddy for digging holes in their parents' yards and performing stress tests on the gardens' plants - will thise successfully transplant?  can it survive without roots?  can it survive without roots or leaves?  His presence will be missed by all except perhaps my surviving garden plants.  Never fear, Leo, Maddy will likely finish off a few more in your honor.

Where was Charlie during all this excitement?  Working out on the changing mat.  Somewhat embarrassing that.

Later, we were lucky enough to have Chutima (an ex-colleague and long time of Denise's) visit from Bangkok.  I would speak terribly kindly about her, but as she may read this and feel embarrassed, lets just say she is great to have around.  And I'm not just saying that because she turned up laden with cool Thai gifts ... though she did.  While one is loathe to pick a favorite gift, the Thai dresses that she brought for Katie and Maddy were fabulous ... but don't take my word for it, look at the pictures.  Come back anytime, Chutima, and bring the family.

Zoo Are You? Zoo, Zoo. Zoo, Zoo. I Really Wanna Go! PDF Print E-mail

The threat of thunderstorms loomed in the afternoon despite the midmorning sunshine that tempted the Chai-Mulkerins on this fateful zoo visit.  This initiation of Charlie into the joys and mysteries of gawking at animals and playing at the zoo's playground and listening to his father mumble - "They aren't cute and cuddly.  If you met them in the wild, they'd break your bones, tear your flesh, and have your heart for breakfast.  Penguins are the mafia of the animal world.  Seriously, haven't you ever watched that documentary - Godzilla vs. the Emporer Penguins.  Scarey stuff."

Sadly, Charlie slept through the fatherly wisdom and the entire visit.  As a first visit, it was by definition, not memorable for him.  Katie and Maddy on the other hand had a wonderful time while Mark was getting pummelled by sugar infused ten year olds and doused by the water play area's deviously tessaract-like design.  Denise, meanwhile, watched over Charlie, sipped Ribena, published twelve company reports via her blackberry (she has slowed down on her maternity leave), and single handedly saved the global markets from further collapsed (I know - things still look bad, but you try bending the financial system to your will when you are up every other hour at night feeding a baby - it could be worse).

(Okay, for those of you who don't know me and my humor - We went to the Zoo.  It was Charlie's first time.  He slept through it.  The girls had a good time.  The rest was lies and mythmaking.)

I see your birthday party and raise you a birthday party PDF Print E-mail

This last weekend madness ruled as Katie and Maddy's busy social schedules collided with a now more active Charlie.  For the first two weeks of his life, Charlie chose darkness as he kept his eyes mostly shut in a desire to ... who knows, he's a baby ... but now, he's awake, looking around, and insisting on ... who knows, he's a baby.

On the other side, Katie and Maddy had three birthday parties to attend (Lexi's, Eric's, and Tita Rosie's) as well as Katie's Mandarin make up lesson.  If that doesn't sound like enough, there was more ... I just can't remember what it was ... it is all a blur ... I have vague memories of the playroom ... and considerations of a playdate that didn't happen in the end ... and horsemen, four of them, one riding a pale horse, and his name was ... yeah, it was a busy weekend - oh right, Friday, we went to register Charlie as a US citizen and apply for a passport - see, I told you there was more fun.

And I tacked on a few extra photos of Charlie from the last few days ... Denise wanted them online ASAP!

Proud, Curious, Tired - The Many Impacts of an Alert Charlie PDF Print E-mail

With Charlie continuing to grow, change, put on weight, stay awake more, poop, and generally make his presence more known, his effect on family dynamics has been noticeable.

Recently, Chalie's mother, Denise, has been given to carrying him around like a trophy and shouting "Three-peat!  Three-peat!"  and "Look who's driving growth now!"  Analysts with other banks declined to comment though some sobbed softly over the phone.

Katie, Charlie's eldest sister, has demonstrated a keen interest in her baby brother.  She has also demonstrated a keen interest in books about how bodies work and where organs are located.  We will be watching her desire to play doctor very carefully.

Mark, Charlie's dad, would have commented, but couldn't be roused sufficiently from his exhausted nap on the sofa long enough for a coherent response ... unless "Luke, I am your ... zzzz" means something.

Madeline was at the playroom - she has her minions to consider.

The Challenges of Passport Photography PDF Print E-mail

Charlie.  Eyes open.  Light or white background. No smile.  Face forward.  Hands down.  Simple, right?

You try taking a passport photo of a baby ... on the other hand, don't try it, just hit yourself over the head a half dozen times with a hammer ... it will be less painful.  None of the following photos fit all of the US government requirements ... and these were the good ones.
